6 Steps I Am Taking To Prevent Coronavirus Anxiety

When the news of a novel coronavirus first started spreading in January 2020, I started to go through all of my anxious motions. First, I started seeking out articles about COVID-19. A couple of weeks later, I began sharing posts with subtle warnings and discussing my fears with family and friends. Before I knew it, I was incessantly checking the Coronavirus map multiple times of the day. Does that sound like you, too? 

Even if we don’t travel and always wash our hands, we can’t control what everyone else is doing. Our co-workers, loved ones, and the strangers who pass us on the street may have been somewhere where they contracted this novel Coronavirus. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time has proven costly for almost 4,000 people.

As unfortunate as these losses are, we must continue on with our lives. Living in a bubble is not a feasible option. We need to go to work to pay bills, the grocery store to get food, and get on airplanes to go on much-needed vacations. Once I realized this, I was able to kick my checking habits. Here’s how I’m managing my COVID-19 anxiety.

Stop Checking the Coronavirus Map 

As of right now, there are 32 states with Coronavirus in the United States. That number is expected to rise. If your state has already been affected, you may have already stopped checking the Coronavirus map. However, those of us with Coronavirus anxiety are still prone to watch the number of Coronavirus cases as it continues to spread. Cut that habit.

If COVID-19 hasn’t spread to your state yet, check it once in the morning. Don’t hit reload throughout the day. A live-action update isn’t going to change the way you’re going about your day. 

You’re still going to “chance it” and do the things you planned on doing. So, just do them. Be in the moment. Check the map in the morning. If there’s an emergency in your area, then you can plan accordingly. Otherwise, go about business as usual. 

Read One Article Per Day 

While ignoring the latest Coronavirus news may seem like the perfect solution for someone with Coronavirus anxiety, it’s not a wise one. You should be educated about what’s going on, especially if you have someone in your family with a weakened immune system, like a grandparent or newborn. However, excessive information intake will only feed your fears.

Reading multiple news sources throughout the day instead of focusing on your work is just going to feed your Coronavirus anxiety. So, pick one article per day and then move on. 

Don’t Feed Into Social Media 

Another reason for such heightened Coronavirus anxiety is the amount of misinformation out there. Many of us rely on social media to find our news. When we see something shared in our feed, we might just read the headline or look to see who shared their thoughts. But what we’re reading might not be facts. 

From one anxious person to another, anxiety is a powerful tool. It can be crippling, all-consuming, and cause us to become obsessively compulsive. That’s a lot of pull. So, if we’re going to allow something to hijack our lives like fear of Coronavirus, we should at least have the actual facts.

So, stop relying on social media as a news source. Just keep scrolling when you see the words “Coronavirus.” Seek out your own Coronavirus news from a reputable source. Just go to one every day. 

If you already have a news go-to, use it. For those looking for cold hard facts and data, try the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) websites. To get a mix of facts and analysis, National Public Radio (NPR) is also a rational source. 

These outlets won’t feed your hysteria. They’ll offer you a logical and real-life perspective for you to analyze and draw your own conclusions from. If you still get Coronavirus anxiety, it may be in your best interest to stop reading news reports altogether while you use your standard anxiety coping mechanisms. 

Build Up Your Immune System
